‘Empowering young people to enhance everyday journeys’ is the mission behind the newly launched Active Travel Inspectors scheme developed by Modeshift and aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils across England. And here at Brightwayz social enterprise we are thrilled to be supporting that mission too by hosting the selling of official additional resources for the scheme through our online shop.

Additional Resources to Support Active Travel Inspectors

Those who have seen the video introducing the scheme cannot have failed to notice the swathes of blue waistcoats printed with the eye-catching Active Travel Inspectors logo that the pupils are wearing. Measuring the height of dips and dents in the pavement is easy with the special measuring tool included in the starter pack which also includes clipboards, waistcoats, badges, pencils, bike bells, stickers and a bag to keep the kit in. There are plenty of goodies in the ATI range to get pupils excited!

Boosting Modeshift STARS

The Active Travel Inspectors scheme was developed by Modeshift who also head up the Modeshift STARS (Sustainable Travel Accredited and Recognised) scheme which enables schools to design, implement and get accredited for their school travel plans. The scheme fits extremely well into the STARS accreditation scheme as it enables pupils to inspect their school site and neighbourhood. They can identify ways to make walking, wheeling and cycling easier and more enjoyable for school journeys. Findings from their efforts can be fed back to the local authority and Modeshift to contribute to making everyday journeys better for everyone.

Strong Themes for Active Travel Inspectors

There are seven strong themes that the scheme covers - school grounds, space to explore, crossing the road, pavements for people, motorised traffic, green space and nature, and sounds and smells around us. The first six categories are based on the themes that Active Travel England and transport planners use for professional inspections… so the scheme may even inspire some future career choices in the sector!

Free Digital Resources for Active Travel Inspectors

Great news for schools is that all the information resources are available free as digital downloads - a classroom PowerPoint, teacher activity booklet and Active Travel Inspectors activity sheet. The resources we sell are an optional extra to boost engagement and give support to the scheme. To take part schools in England just need to register for Modeshift STARS and then log in to access the resources. Many local highways authorities across the country are actively supporting the scheme too and encouraging schools to take part.

We’re looking forward to seeing this amazing scheme grow and seeing pupils given a chance to get involved and make a real difference to the streets in their neighbourhood.
