Space Walk to School

“What do you do if you see a space man?” “ …. Park your car, man!”. Okay, apologies for the corny and car-centric joke to launch this blog about sustainable travel and the walk to school! But in fact many of the parents did not actually have to worry about finding a parking space when they joined our recent walk to school event.

Over 100 pupils, parents, teachers and siblings from Hayfield Cross C of E Primary School in Kettering  joined the walk towards the end of May and children who took part received a sticker to show their peers they had been part of it.

For this years’ spring UK Walk to School week promoted by Living Streets, the everyday walking charity, we adopted their ‘space’ theme and got these parents, pupils and teachers ‘on board’ too. Dressing up as a spaceman and a star… or any other fun character… are ‘business as usual’ for us here at Brightwayz if it means making the walk to school more fun and attracting more attention.

The school are already working on lots of other active travel initiatives and are heading towards achieving their Modeshift STARS (Sustainable Travel Accredited and Recognised) award for their efforts. We are helping the school thanks to funding from the local developer Hanwood Park LLP and using our ST:EPS (Safer Travel: Enabling Pupils and Schools)  programme of activities and support to achieve this.

If you are involved in a local school (ie in North Northamptonshire) and interested in us bringing  the ST:EPS programme to your school to help you promote active travel, reduce traffic congestion outside the school gates and achieve the Modeshift STARS accreditation, please get in touch. We can offer assistance with finding funding for it.

Whether you are local or further afield we hope that by featuring some of the easy walk to school engagement activities we do with our own local schools and highlighting some of our related product resources we can inspire you to try or support these activities yourself.
